How we see success:  We have several measures of success at NewVines, but one of the most important is - are we successfully training local leaders and teachers to take over?  Our primary goal is to build competence into the populations we work with, so we can move "up" to coaching leaders, and opening up new ministries.

Pictured here is one of our Trainers in Uganda who, having mastered our class in Personal Financial Management, is conducting a class on the same subject with her colleagues in Mbale.

Rachel's Story

Last week, we shared a touching story about Rachel, a young mother and wife of a young pastor, who came to our first training session. Rachel used what she learned to establish a business that is continuing to grow despite challenges presented during COVID lockdowns. We are excited to show more about what Rachel has done with her business. With this new and updated video, we have included photos and subtitles so you can see how this training has changed Rachel’s life for her and her family. Listen to her story below…

Oliver - Ivory Coast

When a global health organization offered Oliver a very favorable arrangement on lab equipment, he had enough confidence to "do the deal," establishing a much needed health clinic in Yopougon, Ivory Coast, and employing 6 other people.

What a great example of real Hope coming alive! Some of the stories we get from our "Restoring Hope" program seem simple, while some seem exceptional.

Olivier's story is one of the latter: he is a pastor, but African pastors don't make much money so they usually need to find a way to make a living.  Going through NVI's training program, Olivier learned some business skills, but more importantly grew in confidence that he could "do this."

We love sharing stories of how our Restoring Hope program is helping people by providing training in fundamental financial management:

Valentine is a widow from Kanadaria who has been selling food staples in her local market for a long time. However, she didn't experience growth in her business until she completed NVI's Restoring Hope training program where she learned to separate business and household finances, save for emergencies, and basic marketing skills. After putting this training into practice, she has money used specifically for her business, which is growing and generating a profit enabling her to build the display you see in this photo. Valentine also has money to meet her household needs and savings she can draw on in the event of an emergency.

It's a joy to see Valentine's success!

We would like you to meet Felix. Felix is an orphan staying with his aging grandmother. He has some support through House of Hope Ministry in Katito, Kenya, where he is grade 10. The Social Worker at House of Hope attended NVI's training, and turned around and taught the material to some of the older orphans.

Felix began keeping some chickens and once he had about 25 chickens, he sold twenty and bought a sheep. As a result, he has been able to support his grandmother with part of his profits during this pandemic period. He is optimistic that when schools reopen, he will be able to buy for himself some of his school supplies.

NVI is honored to be able work with orphans like Felix!

Restoring Hope: Widows Interview

Introducing NVI's First program - Restoring Hope. This is our primary program, working through churches and NGOs to provide their members and local populations the tools and training to get out of poverty and provide for their children.

Over the past few weeks, we had an amazing opportunity to interview widows in Kandaria and Katito as part of our Restoring Hope program. For this initiative, we will be granting business re-development grants to widows whose businesses were hit hard by COVID lockdowns. The widows created a business plan and came to the meeting prepared to discuss their plan with the NVI interviewers. We can’t wait to see how each of these ladies succeed and pray for continued blessings on their business ventures. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue this project.

PAUL

Another great success story: A struggling pastor of a small, struggling church, Paul kept chickens to sell to try and make ends meet. (Pastors in Kenya are not always paid by their congregations.) Going through NVI’s training was like throwing a rope to a drowning man. He immediately put our training into practice, and even began teaching his congregation what he was learning! He used our training on Sales and Marketing to find new and better clients, which allowed him to expand his poultry business. He has even diversified into keeping sheep as well.

From our perspective, though, the best result has been the impact on his children. Listen to what he says in the video (link below – copy and paste to your browser if it does not open automatically.)

FRED

An elementary school teacher, Fred took our initial training and radically changed how he and his wife were managing their money, resulting in a lot more marital harmony! Eventually he took the advice of the men in his group and ceased some of his “exotic” business ventures and has started a sure thing – a poultry business. Not only that, he has begun training some of his first-graders to put aside savings out of any money they receive. The next generation is learning good habits early!

Lucy built a thriving business!

Lucy went through our training and began saving what she could. She saved 200 shillings ($2.00 US) and began buying and reselling milk. Practicing what we taught her, every week she reinvested a little in the business before taking anything out for household expenses. Now, approximately one year later, her capital has grown to 1500 shillings and she takes out enough to live on weekly! This is an amazing accomplishment for a widow living alone in the Kenya Highlands!
